GET YOURSELF HOME SKYLER JAMES
by Jordan Tannahill
by Jordan Tannahill
Get Yourself Home Skyler James is a riveting thirty minute dramatic monologue based on the true story of a small town teenager from Texas who naively joins the American military after high school graduation. When fellow soldiers uncover Skyler's hidden sexual orientation, she is forced to desert to Canada in the face of violent threats, prejudice, harassment and abuse.
What is a "Classroom Play"?
Skyler James is designed to play in a classroom rather than a large theatre.
Roseneath Theatre will present three (3) 30-minute performances of Skyler James
per day during a week-long High School Residency (15 performances per week).
Each performance is followed by a 30-minute Talk Back Session hosted by a trained
professional facilitator from the TDSB Equity or Human Sexuality Department. Talk
Backs are modified to fit the specific course curriculum of each audience and are an
essential component to the program.
This unique theatrical form aims to promote greater understanding and tolerance
around sexual orientation issues and homophobia by triggering new insights into
everyone's right to respectful treatment and freedom from harassment.
Skyler James can serve as a powerful teaching tool and excellent source
material for discussion in a broad range of subject areas, programs and
high school courses? Drama & the Arts; Equity, Women?s and Family Studies;
English, Social Studies and the Humanities, Civics, Law, Health, Gay Straight Alliance
Programs, Safe School Initiatives, etc.
