Natalie began her career in the arts as an actor and singer with a keen interest in producing and directing. In 1999, with her partner, Juan Carlos Velis, she founded Acropolis Theatre. Acropolis was created to encourage the professional growth of new artists under mentors from the Canadian theatre community and to explore a new theatre-going audience. In 2000, Acropolis Theatre opened Shakespeare on the Thames in London, Ontario. This hugely successful outdoor Shakespeare company ran for three seasons built on the strength of an outstanding response from a large supportive audience and the talent of superb casts and director.
Natalie's passion for TYA sprouted from first seeing Roseneath Theatre's production of "Danny, King of the Basement" in 2000. It opened her eyes to the importance and need for professional, high quality production and performance in the lives of children.
This early experience with Roseneath led Natalie to join Green Thumb Theatre for Young People in Vancouver, BC. Led by General Manager, Ivan Habel and Artistic Director, Patrick MacDonald, Natalie was immersed in theatre that spoke to youth as critical, intelligent audience members; theatre that explored and reflected the stories and challenges of their daily lives on a stage that was welcoming and unassuming. Her experience working on "Cranked" and "Speed" led her to become an avid supporter of new and up-and-coming playwrights who are dedicated to the genre of TYA.
Natalie has assistant directed "The Invisible Girl" under Patrick MacDonald (Green Thumb Theatre), and co-directed "Borderlines" with Joshua Reynolds (Second Best Bird Theatre Company, Playwrights Theatre Centre Vancouver) and looks forward to opportunities to explore this avenue in the future.
Natalie returned to her native Ontario to spend a season as Vice President of Touring Operations at Kids' Entertainment in Toronto under Cheryle Hanson. Representing companies such as Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, Theatre Terra and Spiel Theatre Holland, she has developed a deep understanding of the role of touring in North America and abroad. Through her participation at festivals such as the Tweetakt Festival in The Netherlands, ASSITEJ in Australia, and the International Performing Arts for Youth Showcases in North America she has been exposed to the brilliant work being created for young people, not only here in Canada, but throughout the world.
Recently, she has been asked to speak at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference in New York on behalf of touring companies in Canada to promote both importing and exporting touring productions as well as to demystify the rules and regulations surrounding International Work Permits and Visas.
Natalie is overjoyed to have come home to Roseneath Theatre. She looks forward to working with this exciting and creative company and to soak up all of David S. Craig's experience!
