Head à Tête is the story of two strangers who overcome the barriers of language and mistrust to find friendship. Set in a barren, cold and windy land that was once a beautiful garden, Head à Tête unfolds with the arrival of a strange cage-like object. As if triggered by the presence of life, a magical tree bearing “fruit” begins to grow. When two strangers, one French-speaking and one English-speaking, appear from opposite directions and discover the tree and the sanctuary it provides, a standoff begins. Frustration and conflict grows with each word spoken, but it is through the loss and re-birth of the tree that they find peace in each other’s company.

Head À Tête is written by David S. Craig and Robert Morgan and originally premiered at the Milk International Children’s Festival in 1989. It was subsequently remounted in a production directed by Robert Morgan in 2001 and then by Jim Warren in 2002. During the fall of 2000 it had toured a sold-out 10 week run followed by internationally touring throughout 2001-2002. Head À Tête won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Production in 1991.

A History of Head à Tête
Originally produced by our theatre’s founders in 1989 and Directed by Alain Gregoire, Head à Tête premiered at the Milk International Children’s Festival in 1989. It was the winner of the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Production 1991. It started the writers David S. Craig and Robert Morgan. The set and costumes were created by Mary Kerr. Originally it was titled “Together Ensemble” when it was workshopped in 1987 presented by the Northumberland Players Youtheatre.
The play has also been produced by Citadel Theatre in Edmonton Alberta (1991), Quest Theatre in Calgary Alberta (1995), Dancing Sky Theatre in Meacham Saskatchewan (1996) and Theatre Direct in Toronto Ontario (2011).
The show was subsequently remounted in a production directed by Robert Morgan in 2000/2001, selling out a 10 week tour. It was mounted by Jim Warren in 2002 and toured internationally all the way to Singapore! It starred Adrian Churchill, Sean Beak and John Devenisch. Kristin MacCollum was the Stage Manager, Props and set were designed by Rogers West, and costumes by Linda Phillips.
